Welcome to the College of
Science

We live in an exciting time. The world around us is changing at
an almost unimaginable rate. The pace of scientific discoveries and
technological advances is unprecedented in human history. Today the
human genome has been successfully mapped, heralding a new era of research
into diseases and their cures; we have detected more than one hundred
planets around other stars, leading to advances in research in extra-solar
planetary systems; a tool originally developed to transmit scientific data
among researchers has now become the World Wide Web, revolutionizing
communications, commerce, and information access; and the nuclear magnetic
resonance machine, a standard research tool in chemistry and physics
laboratories has evolved into the powerful medical imaging device known as
magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These are just a very few of the
enormous number of advances that have occurred in recent years.
The College of Science at Weber State University boasts world-class
scholars and researchers who are committed to providing the finest
possible undergraduate education. Our faculty include authors of
world-renowned textbooks in human anatomy, astrophysics, and chemistry.
In addition, our faculty have engaged in research using the Hubble Space
Telescope, an on-campus DNA laboratory, and national supercomputer
facilities. Faculty have also traveled around the world to study how
non-western cultures use plants for medicinal purposes, or to investigate
fossil remains.
As a student majoring in one of the seven disciplines within the
College, you will have a tremendous opportunity to learn from top faculty
and to work side by side with them in undergraduate research projects.
I hope that you will consider a major in one of the life sciences,
physical sciences, or mathematics at Weber State University. The
opportunities and rewards are boundless!
Dr. Dale A. Ostlie, Dean
